Homeschooling in Wyoming

Teach the seven required subjects. Follow the withdrawal rule when it applies. Then begin.

Welcome, Wyoming homeschool family. Wyoming recognizes a home-based educational program as its baseline independent route. Instruction may be provided by a parent, legal guardian, or a person designated by the parent or guardian.

Who this applies to

Compulsory attendance generally applies when a child’s seventh birthday falls on or before August 1 and continues until the child has attained the sixteenth birthday or completed the tenth grade.

A September 15 boundary applies when a child began kindergarten through Wyoming’s approved early-admission procedure.

Start a home-based educational program

Wyoming does not require routine homeschool registration, annual notification, or annual curriculum submission for a child who has never enrolled in public school.

The person administering the program must ensure that a compliant curriculum is actually provided. The 2025 Homeschool Freedom Act removed the former requirement to send that curriculum to the local school board each year.

Withdraw carefully if your child attended public school

The removal of annual curriculum submission did not repeal Wyoming’s separate public-school withdrawal law.

When W.S. 21-4-102(c) applies, the parent or other responsible adult must meet in person with a district counselor or administrator and provide written consent to withdrawal. The consent includes a separate provision authorizing release of the student’s identity and address to the Wyoming National Guard Youth Challenge Program for recruitment.

A family whose child has never enrolled in public school does not have this district-notification duty.

Teach the required curriculum

Wyoming requires a sequentially progressive curriculum of fundamental instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, civics, history, literature, and science.

The curriculum provisions do not require a private school or home-based educational program to include a concept, topic, or practice that conflicts with its religious doctrines. They also do not prohibit including material that is consistent with those doctrines.

Current home-based-program statutes do not prescribe a 175-day calendar, an hourly instructional minimum, a portfolio review, or a state assessment for ordinary participants. ESA students follow a separate, publicly funded program with different requirements.

Keep useful records

Wyoming does not prescribe a routine homeschool portfolio or attendance-log format. Keeping dependable records is still wise, especially through high school.

Maintain course descriptions, work samples, grades, attendance information, credits, and a transcript. Wyoming and its public-school districts do not issue the home-based student’s diploma or transcript, so families should establish completion requirements and preserve their own documentation.

A family-created diploma, certificate of completion, or transcript is not a state-issued Wyoming credential.

Requirements vary and change. Confirm current requirements with the Wyoming Department of Education, the applicable school district when withdrawing a previously enrolled child, and current Wyoming law.
