Letter of Intent to Homeschool Template
Important Notice
This template is provided as a general guide to assist homeschooling families worldwide. Different regions, states, provinces, and countries may have unique submission requirements, and this form may need to be modified to meet local expectations.
This tool is designed to support families who already have the legal right to homeschool in their area. It does not establish or confirm your eligibility to homeschool. It is the parent’s responsibility to verify the specific guidelines of their local education authority before submission.
SchoolhouseTeachers.com does not provide legal advice or guarantee acceptance of this document by any school or government agency.
Use ST’s Letter of Intent to Homeschool Template for Easy Submission
SchoolhouseTeachers.com provides a customizable template to help you create an official Letter of Intent to Homeschool—a document commonly used to notify your local education authority of your plan to begin homeschooling. This professionally formatted letter is intended for families whose children are not currently enrolled in a school, such as those starting homeschooling at the beginning of a school year or when a child reaches compulsory school age.
In contrast, if your child is currently attending a public or private school and you are making the move to homeschooling, you may also need to submit a Letter of Withdrawal to formally remove them from enrollment. In that case, the Letter of Intent does not replace the withdrawal notice but may be used alongside it, depending on local requirements.
This template is designed to satisfy general notification expectations in most jurisdictions while conveying educational commitment and professionalism. Be sure to verify the submission requirements in your state, province, or country before use.
When to Use Each Form:
Use the Letter of Intent if:
- Your child is approaching school age and has never been enrolled in a traditional school.
- You’re planning to homeschool from the beginning of the upcoming school year.
Use the Letter of Withdrawal if:
- Your child is currently enrolled in a public or private school and you wish to start homeschooling mid-year.
- You’re switching to homeschooling after the school year has commenced.
How It Works:
✅ Download the template to your device before filling it out to avoid losing your progress.
✅ Open the file in a PDF reader (like Adobe Acrobat), then fill in your family’s details.
✅ Save the completed document, and submit it to your state, provincial, or national education authority after verifying their specific submission requirements.
Important: Each locality may have unique submission guidelines. Always verify specific requirements with your local education office before submission.
Important Note:
If you choose to fill out the form directly in your browser before downloading, be aware that your changes will not be saved unless you download the completed form to your device. Closing the browser window or refreshing the page will erase any entered information.
⚠️ Additional Documentation for Certain States
Some states—like Illinois under House Bill 2827—require additional documentation beyond this Letter of Intent. In these cases, you may need to submit proof that the homeschool administrator holds a high school diploma or GED.
If your state has this requirement, please download our Declaration Form Template here. This form can be submitted alongside your Letter of Intent and includes space to document your credentials and educational commitment.
