Legal Foundation and Status

Homeschooling is legally permitted in Barbados under Article 42 of the Education Act Cap. 41 (1997). This statute allows parents to educate their children at home with the approval of the Ministry of Education.

Parents must begin by submitting a formal written request to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education. This application should include:

• The child’s full name, date of birth, and previous schools attended

• A detailed curriculum plan

• Names and qualifications of the teaching parent or tutor

• A proposed weekly timetable

An interview with the Ministry is usually required. Once approved, families must renew their homeschooling permission annually. The Ministry may also conduct home visits through School Attendance Officers to confirm that instruction remains active and appropriate.
