Learning to Read with Children’s Books
Students can improve their reading ability by using children’s books. Activities include introducing the story to the reader in order to improve comprehension, adding slash marks between phrases and sentences, reading slowly, reading at a normal pace, having the reader read aloud, imitative reading, timed reading, repetition of prior reading, and reading with expression.

Enjoying Summer Reading with Struggling Readers
Part 1: Struggling readers learn how to read their favorite books on their own . . . and enjoy it. By following a four-step method, students increase their fluency and comprehension.

Part 2: Timed Rapid Reading: Through selections of 50- to 100-word excerpts, students increase their reading speed. Reading speed charts and guidelines are provided.

The Map Skills Activity

Reading Fluency
Readers who read letter by letter or word for word, have delays in cadence and rhythm, experience difficulty blending sounds, need a sense of the whole story before reading, or have strong verbal skills but a weak written language can increase their fluency by working with phrased-cued reading, repeated reading, timed reading, and reading with expression. Repetition and exposure to patterns helps students to eventually recognize words in print in any context. Two separate books are available: grades 1 and 2 and grades 3 and 4. Recommended for reading grade levels 2+.

The following units utilize the materials used throughout this course in a particular sequence to help a specific learning type.
Reading Lab – Analytic Learners
Students who read from the parts to the whole and do well with phonics may follow this track to improve reading skills. Sixteen lessons provide an overview of phonics, including beginning and ending consonants, short vowel and long vowel sounds, the silent /e/, consonant digraphs, and beginning and ending consonant blends. Workbooks and audio are provided.
Reading Lab – Global Learners
Students who struggle with reading and/or those who are dyslexic can improve their reading fluency by following a path that moves from the whole to the parts. Various news stories are presented and then broken down into parts so the student can comprehend what is being read without the struggle of sounding out words. Workbooks and audio are provided.
Middle and High School Struggling Readers
Students in middle school and high school learn to decode, read fluently, and interpret complex words and technical information by following a path that focuses on each of these areas in the context of science, the news, and prefixes. Workbooks and audio are provided.
