Reading Remedies

  • Reading and Spelling Multisyllable Words: Struggling readers who have trouble with multisyllable words will be taught how to increase reading fluency and comprehension through patterns, rhyming words, ending patterns, and syllables. Various activities practice exercises are provided.
  • Phonics: Students will be able to improve their reading fluency and speed by learning to read and spell through phonics, practicing with word patterns, and rhyming words. Students who struggle to read due to dyslexia can work through the Fourteen Steps to Teach Dyslexics to Spell & Read.
  • Reading Fluency Part One and Part Two: Readers who read letter by letter or word for word, have delays in cadence and rhythm, experience difficulty blending sounds, need a sense of the whole story before reading, or have strong verbal skills but a weak written language can increase their fluency by working with phrased-cued reading, repeated reading, timed reading, and reading with expression. Repetition and exposure to patterns helps students to eventually recognize words in print in any context. Two separate books are available: grades 1 and 2 and grades 3 and 4.
  • Learning to Read with Children’s Books: By using children’s books, students can improve their reading ability. Activities include introducing the story to the reader in order to improve comprehension, adding slash marks between phrases and sentences, reading slowly, reading at a normal pace, having the reader read aloud, imitative reading, timed reading, repetition of prior reading, and reading with expression.
  • Improving Reading and Spelling Skills in Science: Students will improve their reading and spelling kids, as well as their general reading skills, in the context of science words and phrases. Students will work with word endings and perform a variety of activities such as writing the words according to their patterns, practicing sorting words, timed reading, and writing definitions.
  • Using Brain Research to Improve Reading: Research has shown that patterns and rhyming words help children learn to read. This lesson provides US History words that follow a pattern and/or rhyme to facilitate reading fluency and comprehension.
  • Spelling by Word Parts: Breaking down multisyllabic words by ending, short and long vowel sounds, and prefixes and suffixes, students will improve their spelling ability. Words are grouped according to common elements, and many worksheets are provided to facilitate learning.
