Welcome to Our Elementary Art Lessons Homeschool Curriculum

Is your newest student itching to expand his creativity? This Elementary Art course will guide your young genius through twelve engaging art projects and will teach her about some of history’s greatest artists along the way! Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Rembrandt . . . they’re all here. After that, the course will guide your student in creating their very own self-portrait. Clear some space, because you’re about to have an abundance of masterpieces to display!

Getting Started with Our Elementary Art Lessons Homeschool Curriculum

Elementary Art lessons are designed for use by students across multiple elementary ages. Each homeschool art unit focuses on a different area of art. The first unit is “Twelve Great Artists,” a twelve-week study of the masters. Additional elementary art lessons include “Lessons in Self-Portraits” and “Advent Art.” An interactive option for lesson delivery breaks up content and helps young homeschool students focus on important concepts, terms, and art project instructions.

Twelve Great Artists explores a famous artist each week. These elementary art lessons include a brief biography of each artist, what type of medium/style made him/her famous, a suggested reading list, and information about some of the artist’s works. Elementary art students can imitate the artist and create art in unique and memorable ways by following the instructions provided in each lesson.

Lessons in Self-Portraits is a series of five fun elementary art lessons that examine hair, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and eyebrows. This series of homeschool art lessons guides kids through creating five different self-portraits—some a bit serious and some very silly.

Advent Art is a series of ten elementary art lessons all themed around the coming of Jesus. Each homeschool art project can be completed with ordinary craft supplies. This is a great way to talk about the meaning of Jesus’ birth with young learners.

What to Do

Go to Class Lessons and download the lesson plan, download the first lesson, and gather the supplies needed for the first project. Start with the Day 1 reading assignment. Follow the instructions each day on the lesson plan and check them off when completed.

Michelangelo
Born: March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Italy
Died: February 18, 1564
Full name: Michelangelo Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni

Michelangelo was an Italian painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and engineer. Much of his artwork has a Biblical theme. He did most of his work during the High Renaissance Era (1475–1525). Some of Michelangelo’s best-known sculptures are the statues David (1504) and Pietà (1492). Michelangelo also painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and helped design St. Peter’s Church in Rome, Italy.

Art Project: Place a chair in the middle of the floor. Tape a piece of art paper underneath the seat of the chair. Have your artist lie on the floor and slide under the chair, facing up. Place a tray next to your artist with markers, pencils, crayons, or paintbrushes and a palate of paints. Have them create a masterpiece while lying down, just like Michelangelo did while painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. (If they are using paints, be sure to protect their eyes in case they get too much on their brush and it drips.) A little something extra: Suggest their masterpiece have a Biblical theme.

More About Our Elementary Art Lessons Homeschool Curriculum

Twelve Great Artists Elementary Art Lessons: Each week, homeschool art students learn about a different artist, what type of medium he/she used, and the artist’s inspirations. Then they each create a “masterpiece” that reflects the artist’s style. Most of the materials needed for this class can be found right at home or purchased at a local department store. It would be beneficial for homeschool art students to become familiar with the words in the Word Glossary (see the printable Course Outline below) so they have a better understanding of the artist’s descriptions.
