Week 1: Matching Tones – Tuning Your Voice

Have you ever watched someone tune a guitar or bass? If you haven’t, you’ll get to see it this week. When a string is out of tune, it might sound too low or too high. The player turns a tuning peg until the sound matches the correct note, and when it finally locks in, it feels right. That’s exactly what you’ll be learning to do with your voice.

Your voice is an instrument too. But instead of strings, frets, or keys, your instrument is inside your own body. When you sing a note, your goal is to “tune” your voice so it matches a given pitch, just like twisting a tuning peg to find the right sound. And just like with a guitar, it’s okay if you’re a little off at first. You’ll learn to hear the difference and gently adjust.

We’ll start with a note that many people can sing comfortably: middle C. If you have a keyboard or piano at home, it’s the white key just to the left of the two black keys that are closest to the middle of the instrument. You can also use a keyboard app or recording.

Listen to the note first. Let it sink into your ears. Then, try to sing the same note back. If you’re not sure you got it, try starting just a little higher or lower and slide your voice until it feels like it clicks into place. That “scoop” is a great tool when you’re learning. It’s like slowly turning a tuning peg until the string sounds right.

Once you find the note, try again—this time, without scooping. Just land right on it. That’s how we build good pitch accuracy: practice, adjust, and try again.

When you feel confident matching middle C, move up to the next note (D), then E, then F… See how high you can go before your voice feels tight or squeaky. Then go lower than C, just a few steps at a time, until your voice feels too low or starts to growl. Don’t force it! That high-to-low stretch is your natural range for now. It may expand over time as you keep practicing, but always stretch gently.

This week, you’ll also try some very short vocal exercises—simple patterns that help your ears and voice work together. These little “voice warm-ups” will help you grow more comfortable and consistent.

And at the end of the week, you’ll get to pick a favorite song and try singing it a few different ways. You’ll start with that scoop technique, like tuning your way into each note. Then you’ll practice holding each note clearly before moving to the next. Finally, you’ll sing the song normally, but with accurate pitch on every note. No sliding, just clear, confident singing.
