Homeschool Mom of Eight with a B.S. in Elementary Education
Karen Strubel is a homeschooling mother of eight. She received a B.S. in Elementary Education from Bob Jones University in 1992 and went on to teach at a private school on the island of Guam. While on Guam, she met her husband, who was serving in the United States Navy. After living a few years in Keyport, Washington, the family moved to South Carolina when her husband left the Navy. Their move included a memorable cross-country drive from Washington State to South Carolina with their two young children, ages two and one, stopping at Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, and other landmarks along the way.
On September 11, 2001, she began her first year of homeschooling. That first day was marked by the tragic events of 9/11, beginning with a phone call from her husband about the World Trade Centers. Homeschooling allowed her to walk through that difficult time with her children while learning together and offering comfort. Since then, the family has completed sixteen years of home education. Their oldest two sons have graduated and are in college, while six children remain at home, ranging from kindergarten to high school.
She enjoys studying geography, especially Christian missions, and finds history most engaging when studied through biographies. Homeschooling has been a journey of learning together as a family, and she treasures the opportunity to write lessons that can be used by others in their own home education. Her desire is that these lessons will help others learn and grow closer to God.
