Renate Braddy is a Texas-born, Army-raised resident of Wytheville, Virginia. She is the mother of two amazing kids and the wife of a minister. Renate has been writing since she could hold a pencil but found her first commercial success through a poem published over ten years ago by Blue Mountain Arts entitled My Son.

Last October, she released her first novel SCARS in Amazon after over two years of research. It is the combination of her two favorite topics, fiction and history, but includes test questions and a vocabulary list to aid homeschooling parents who include it in their teenager’s reading list. If you ask her if she’ll write another novel, she isn’t sure. Writing it was an incredible experience, but she would rather spend the time and emotional energy writing for magazines now (and she’s really excited to be working with SchoolhouseTeachers.com!).

Renate worked with profoundly disabled children in the 1990s while attending college for sociology. She changed majors a few times due to moves and life changes and has finally settled on a career in counseling for which she is still in school. She has been a support parent for families who receive a new Special Needs Diagnosis for their child and tries to assist anyone she can to chart the uncertain waters of finding resources. Her family has been navigating her son’s diagnosis of autism since he was two, and the additional diagnoses of Tourette’s syndrome, OCD, and ADHD the last two years.

Special Needs Trenches: This is a series of articles by the mother of a boy dealing with the volatile combination of autism, Tourette’s syndrome, and puberty. Its purpose is to encourage you, share with you, and remind you of God’s faithful love no matter how dark the day is you are going through.
