How to Use This Course

The Multiplication and Division Practice unit is designed to help parents teach students multiplication and division through examples and practice problems. It is a great review unit for an elementary math class and can be done at the student’s own pace.

Course Introduction

Multiplication:

Using an area model, or box model, to teach multiplication is an excellent way to build conceptual understanding that the standard algorithm for multiplication does not provide. For the past two years, I have used only area models when teaching multiplication (no standard algorithm) and I have seen a HUGE improvement in accuracy and number sense.

Division:

This unit begins with basic times table division. All the math can be done mentally, which allows students to reason about the algorithm. On Lesson 3, students experience repeating the division cycle for the first time (with a 2-digit quotient). All the problems within each lesson intentionally follow the same pattern to allow students time to master each problem type. Every lesson builds on the lesson before with a new level of complexity. In addition to building computational skills, the unit also sprinkles in lessons on how to interpret the remainder in a real-life situation.
