HOW TO’S

How to Teach Phonics was written by Lida M. Williams and published in 1916. It is now in the public domain. Minor adaptations have been made to the original text for use in the Literacy Center.

KINDERGARTEN

Baseball ABC was written by an anonymous book and was published in 1885 by McLoughlin Brothers. It is now in the public domain. Significant revisions to the original text have been made to the text for use in the Literacy Center, including updating several of the rhymes and illustrating it with new pictures children can readily identify.

The Illustrated Alphabet of Birds was written by an unknown author and published in 1851. It is now in the public domain. Minor adaptations have been made to the original text for use in the Literacy Center, and original illustrations have been replaced with color images.

Aunt Mary’s Primer was written by an anonymous author and published in 1851. It is now in the public domain. The spelling and language of the original text has been modernized, and images have been replaced with color images that children can readily identify.

McGuffey’s Eclectic Primer, Revised Edition, was written by William Holmes McGuffey. The revised edition was published in 1909 and is now in the public domain. Minor adaptations to the text have been made, and lines for the student to practice copywork have been added.

1st GRADE

The New National First Reader was written by Charles J. Barnes, Harlan H. Ballard, and S. Proctor Thayer and published in 1888. It is now in the public domain. Minor adaptations to the text have been made, and lines for the student to practice copywork have been added. Additional pictures have also been added for the student’s enjoyment.

McGuffey’s First Eclectic Reader, Revised Edition, was written by William Holmes McGuffey. The revised edition was published in 1920 and is now in the public domain. Minor adaptations to the text have been made, and lines for the student to practice copywork have been added.

2nd GRADE

The Beacon Second Reader was compiled by James H. Fassett and published in 1914. It is now in the public domain. Edits and revisions have been made to the text.

Willie Mouse was written by Alta Tabor and is now in the public domain. Minor revisions have been to the text.

McGuffey’s Second Eclectic Reader, Revised Edition, was written by William Holmes McGuffey. The revised edition was published in 1920 and is now in the public domain. Minor adaptations to the text have been made, and lines for the student to practice copywork have been added.

3rd GRADE

The Ontario Readers Third Book was published by the Ontario Minister of Education and published in 1909. It is now in the public domain. Minor adaptations have been made, some stories have been removed, and spelling has been Americanized.

Raggedy Ann Stories was written by Johnny Gruelle in 1918 and is now in the public domain. The version shared above was adapted by the Office of English Language Programs, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, United States Department of State and is used with permission. Additional minor adaptations have been made for use in the Literacy Center.

4th GRADE

New National Fourth Reader was written by Charles J. Barnes and J. Marshall Hawkes. It was published in 1884 and is now in the public domain. Minor adaptations have been made, some stories have been removed, and spelling has been revised.

3rd and 4th GRADE READERS WITH COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS

The Adventures of Buster Bear, The Adventures of Chatterer the Red Squirrel, The Adventures of Grandfather Frog, and The Adventures of Lightfoot the Deer were written by Thornton W. Burgess and published between 1920-1921. They are now in the public domain. Minor adaptations have been made, an occasional tale has been removed, and spelling and punctuation have been modernized.

Wee Ones Bible Stories was written by an unknown author and published in 1903. It is now in the public domain. Minor adaptations have been made, and some stories have been removed.

Mother Stories from the New Testament was written by an unknown author and published prior to 1923. It is now in the public domain. Minor adaptations have been made, and some stories have been removed.
