More About Our Teaching Reading Through Play Homeschool Language Arts Course
Welcome to the Teaching Reading Through Play homeschool language arts course. As a certified teacher with a master’s degree in elementary reading and literacy, Lisa Tanner understands the dynamics of reading.
As a homeschooling mom to seven, she also knows it’s very possible to teach children to read without fancy supplies or expensive curriculum. This Teaching Reading Through Play homeschool language arts course guides homeschool parents through the process.
Designed for early learners who already know the names and sounds for all 26 letters, these homeschool language arts lessons build on those existing literacy skills. Through intentional play and activities, little learners are gently guided into reading.
As a beginning reading course, Teaching Reading Through Play focuses mainly on short vowel sounds. Toward the end of the homeschool language arts course, long vowel sounds are introduced.
Structure
Divided into 180 short lessons, this course covers a 36-week school year, with essential reading topics introduced weekly.
Each homeschool language arts topic features five short activities specially designed to teach reading through play. Doing one activity each day, five days each week, is the recommended pace. That’s because short, repetitive exposure to a concept over time is usually more beneficial to young learners than longer lessons completed less frequently.
Each week’s lesson includes key information just for parents. This information provides insight into the science of teaching reading and answers some common “why” questions.
Parent Involvement
The early years are essential for building a solid foundation for learning. That means instructor involvement is necessary. Even if the homeschool parent’s time is limited, these short lessons and easy-to-set-up activities are easy to implement.
Materials
Don’t worry; nothing fancy is needed for this course. These homeschool language arts lessons are designed around typical household items, books that are readily available at most libraries, and common toys.
Each week has a materials list and instructions for the week to make preparation easy!
