Welcome to Our Art Lessons for Homeschoolers: Learning About Art Curriculum

Do you want to introduce your preschooler or elementary school students to famous artists and simple art techniques that will help them recreate famous works of art? Learning About Art is a ten-week course that will introduce children to several famous artists like John James Audubon, Grant Wood, Winslow Homer, and others. During the course, children will learn important vocabulary words and practice drawing lines, shapes, and identifying and applying color to their own drawings. Your children will create work that “is symbolic and representational, but creative and spontaneous” and can be framed and treasured for years to come.

A Is for Audubon
By Sharon Jeffus

Can you make the shape of an A? An A is made from three lines.

In art, line defines shape. An A is made from two diagonal lines and one horizontal line. You can make different kinds of birds using lines, circles, triangles, and ovals. Lines create different shapes. John James Audubon is a very famous artist whose name begins with A. Audubon loved birds. He made many paintings of birds. We are going to look at some of his paintings.

Here is a picture of a crow. What color is the crow? The crow is sitting on the branch of a tree. You can listen to the sound of a crow here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xg92vEt4sW0. Can you make the sound of a crow? Audubon always made pictures of birds in their natural surroundings.

The picture on the next page is of a pink flamingo. How many flamingos are in the picture? Things in the foreground are larger, and things in the background are smaller. Where is the flamingo standing? The large flamingo is in the foreground. This bird has very long legs and an extremely long neck. You can listen to a flamingo here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7h65SnP3Yg. The flamingo is pink. When you mix red and white paint together, you get pink. Pink is a pastel color.

More About Our Learning About Art Lessons for Homeschoolers Curriculum

One of the most vital subjects to teach to younger children is art. Many parents Sharon Jeffus has worked with find that teaching these art lessons for homeschoolers is surprisingly easy and enjoyable. Although art is not considered a core subject in the finest sense of the word, the power of the visual mediums to communicate permeates society. Homeschool families watch movies and television, go to beautifully designed websites that capture imagination and teach, are daily bombarded with powerful visual images that attempt to convince about one thing or another, wear clothes designed by an artist, and walk through architecture. If a child is a visual or kinesthetic learner, the more art the homeschool parent includes in the school day, the more the child may remember and enjoy school. The time to start art education and looking at master works of art is preschool, so why not introduce them to one of these art lessons for homeschoolers at a time?
